This photo was taken in Arles, France on 8 June 2016 (our last full day on vacation). It was still morning, so the warmth had not yet become an uncomfortable heat.
I value peacefulness; so when I entered the cloister of the Church of St. Trophime, I felt a joyous calm. It was just me, the warm sunlight, the aligned stone arches, and the simple courtyard. Tranquility.
Despite my atheism, I do feel an awe amidst grand (often religious) architecture, a certain reverence for elegance, if it’s couched in quietness.
